‘World’s First’ Flying Car Enters Production as £235,000 Vehicle Promises to Soar Over Traffic

For generations, the idea of a flying car has belonged firmly in the realm of science fiction, immortalised by cartoon families, futuristic films and bold predictions that never quite came true. Now, that long-held dream is edging closer to reality as what is being described as the world’s first true flying car officially enters production in the United States.

After more than a decade of research, testing and engineering challenges, California-based Alef Aeronautics has announced that its groundbreaking Model A Ultralight is now being hand-assembled, marking a significant milestone in the race to transform personal transportation. Priced at approximately £235,000, the vehicle promises to allow drivers to quite literally rise above gridlocked roads, lifting vertically into the air and flying over traffic congestion before landing and continuing the journey on wheels.

A Long Road and Runway to Production

Alef Aeronautics was founded with a bold ambition: to build a vehicle that functions as both a fully road-legal car and a genuine aircraft. Unlike many electric air taxi projects, which depend on dedicated take-off zones or vertiports, Alef’s creation is designed to operate wherever a conventional car can travel.

The company has now confirmed that production has officially begun at its Silicon Valley facility, where the first vehicles are being painstakingly assembled by hand. According to Alef, each car requires several months of intensive craftsmanship, testing and inspection before it is considered safe for delivery.

Initially, only a small number of customers will receive the flying car as part of a carefully controlled rollout. These early adopters will effectively act as real-world testers, helping the company identify potential issues before scaling up to wider production.

Jim Dukhovny, the company’s founder and chief executive, described the moment as historic.

“We are proud to say that production of the first flying car has started on schedule,” he said. “Our team has worked relentlessly to reach this point. People have been waiting for years to see whether a flying car could truly exist, and now we are finally getting production off the ground.”

How the Flying Car Actually Works

At first glance, the Model A Ultralight resembles a sleek, compact electric vehicle, but hidden beneath its futuristic exterior lies the technology that allows it to fly. The vehicle uses eight electric propellers, concealed within a carbon-fibre mesh structure located in both the bonnet and the rear of the car.

This mesh design allows air to pass freely through the body while ensuring the spinning blades remain safely enclosed. When activated, the propellers generate enough lift to allow the vehicle to take off vertically — without wings — using electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) technology.

On the ground, the car functions like a conventional electric vehicle, powered by four independent motors located in the wheels. When airborne, the Model A can reportedly reach cruising speeds of up to 110 miles per hour, offering a radically faster alternative to sitting in traffic.

The cabin is designed to accommodate two occupants, with space limited by the need to keep the overall weight as low as possible. The vehicle measures roughly five metres long and two metres wide, giving it a footprint comparable to a standard car.

Range, Speed and Legal Classification

According to Alef Aeronautics, the Model A Ultralight offers a ground range of approximately 200 miles, while its flying range is estimated at around 110 miles. These figures reflect the realities of current battery technology, which still imposes limits on electric flight endurance.

One of the most unusual aspects of the vehicle is its legal classification. Weighing just 385 kilograms, the Model A Ultralight qualifies as a low-speed electric vehicle, similar to a golf cart under US regulations. As a result, it is restricted to a top speed of 25 miles per hour on public roads, despite being capable of higher speeds in theory.

While this limitation may frustrate some drivers, Alef views the Ultralight model as a stepping stone toward its full-scale flying car, which the company hopes to produce in greater numbers once regulatory and manufacturing hurdles are overcome.

Certification, Training and Safety Controls

Alef Aeronautics received airworthiness certification from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in 2023, a crucial step that brought the project closer to commercial reality. However, company executives have been clear that safety will dictate every aspect of the rollout.

Early customers will only be permitted to operate their vehicles under highly controlled conditions, with strict guidelines governing where and how flight is allowed. Each owner will also be required to undergo training covering operation, compliance and maintenance.

The manufacturing process itself combines robotic systems with detailed hand assembly, followed by extensive component testing and numerous test flights. Alef insists that no vehicle will leave its facility without passing rigorous safety checks.

Demand Already Soaring

Despite the eye-watering price tag, interest in the flying car has been substantial. Alef reports that it has already received around 3,500 pre-orders, representing a combined value of more than £800 million.

While most customers will have to wait years before receiving their vehicles, the demand suggests there is a strong appetite for innovative alternatives to traditional transportation  particularly in congested urban areas.

Mr Dukhovny has previously expressed his ambition to make flying cars more accessible in the long term. He has suggested that, once mass production becomes possible, the cost of a flying car could fall dramatically, potentially approaching £25,000, although such a price point remains a distant goal.

Not Alone in the Sky

Alef Aeronautics is far from the only company attempting to revolutionise air travel. Advances in electric motors, battery systems and autonomous software have sparked a surge of interest in electric flying vehicles.

Technology billionaire Larry Page has invested heavily in aviation start-ups such as Kitty Hawk and Zee Aero, both of which are exploring electric flight concepts. Meanwhile, Airbus has tested its own autonomous eVTOL prototype under its Project Vahana programme.

Other companies, including Detroit-based AirSpaceX, have unveiled prototypes capable of vertical take-off and landing, aimed at carrying multiple passengers for urban commuting, medical evacuation and cargo transport.

Even ride-hailing giant Uber has previously discussed plans for airborne transport, predicting that urban air mobility could become a reality within a decade.

A Glimpse of the Future  With Limits

Despite the excitement, Alef Aeronautics acknowledges that flying cars will not suddenly fill the skies. Regulatory challenges, infrastructure needs and public acceptance remain significant obstacles.

For now, the Model A Ultralight represents a bold proof of concept  a tangible step toward a future once thought impossible. Whether flying cars become a common sight or remain a luxury novelty remains to be seen.
