North Carolina authorities captured a man accused of gunning down a Virginia sheriff’s deputy and injuring another in the southwestern part of the commonwealth Sunday night, ending a two-day manhunt, Virginia officials said.

The Carroll County Sheriff’s Department in Virginia said Michael Timothy Puckett, 55, was apprehended at about 8:30 p.m. just across the border in Surry County, North Carolina.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation said it used a drone to track down the suspect, who was arrested as he was ringing the doorbell of a home in Mount Airy.

The agency said Mr. Puckett was armed with a handgun but was taken into custody without incident.

Police didn’t announce any charges. Mr. Puckett was booked without bond into the Surry County Detention Center in Dobson, North Carolina.

Mr. Puckett was named as the lone suspect in Friday night’s deadly shooting of Carroll County Sheriff’s Deputy Logan Utt.

The sheriff’s office said Deputy Utt and another deputy were called to a home in Cana, Virginia, at about 9:25 p.m. Friday after Mr. Puckett’s family requested a welfare check.

Authorities said Mr. Puckett opened fire on law enforcement once police made contact with him and the officers fired back.

Deputy Utt died at the scene, while the other deputy was hit in his protective vest and taken to a hospital, police said.

“Today, Carroll County has lost a hero, and a family has suffered an unimaginable loss,” Sheriff Kevin A. Kemp said of Deputy Utt, a military veteran who joined the department in 2023. “Please keep his wife, children, family, friends, and fellow deputies in your thoughts and prayers.”

Mr. Puckett fled the area and was evading law enforcement when he was spotted by a wildlife game camera early Sunday near Mount Airy, North Carolina.
