Sophie Cunningham’s rise to fame

Sophie Cunningham has been in the WNBA since 2019, when she was a second-round pick of the Phoenix Mercury.
However, she didn’t see a rise to fame until last season, when she committed a hard foul on a Connecticut Sun player in retaliation for a cheap shot on Caitlin Clark, which almost led to an all-out brawl.
That endeared Cunningham to Clark’s countless supporters and she exploded in popularity overnight, gained a ton of social media followers and has been one of the most popular players in the league ever since.

Cunningham has also been one of Clark’s most vocal supporters when it comes to the Fever superstar taking cheap shots and the league not doing enough to protect her.
“Unfortunately, this type of s*** happens every single game to her and the league and the refs do absolutely nothing nothing about it,” Cunningham said after Clark was a victim of cheap shots from Mercury forward Alyssa Thomas last month. “(The WNBA players) are definitely targeting her and the league and the refs do nothing to protect her.”

Cunningham is in the midst of one of her more productive seasons in the WNBA.
