Peterson says Kyler Murray found his last best chance with Vikings

The NFL is a league where opportunities aren’t guaranteed. For first-round quarterbacks, however, those chances tend to come more often than not.

For Kyler Murray, that opportunity has arrived with a loaded Minnesota Vikings offense. His former teammate believes Murray has landed in an ideal situation, one that mirrors the circumstances of a recent Super Bowl champion.

Former Arizona Cardinals cornerback Patrick Peterson recently spoke with Casino.CA about Murray’s outlook. He believes Murray, unlike many quarterbacks getting a second chance, has all the pieces in place to succeed.

“I don’t think this is his last, last chance. This might be his last best chance, as far as with the team that he has around him. Most teams that are quarterback-needy are bad teams for the most part, so they’re going to need more pieces to fit around them again. He’s in a very fortunate situation to be going to a quarterback-needy team that has everything already around him.” Patrick Peterson told D.J. Siddiqi.

One recent success story from the Minnesota Vikings is this year’s Super Bowl-winning quarterback, Sam Darnold. Darnold revitalized his career under head coach Kevin O’Connell, and Peterson believes Murray could follow a similar path. Even if things don’t work out with the Vikings, Peterson expects Murray to receive another opportunity, just as Darnold did.

“I don’t think this will be his last opportunity, just because you got to go back to Sam Darnold. Now he’s on his fifth team, but he did make the best of his opportunity in Minnesota.” Peterson said.

Murray remains one of the league’s most gifted quarterbacks. He combines elite athleticism with outstanding arm talent and the ability to create explosive plays outside the pocket. At the same time, many evaluators believe his smaller frame limits some aspects of his pocket play.

If there’s a coach capable of maximizing Murray’s talent, it’s O’Connell. He helped revive Darnold’s career and previously got the most out of Kirk Cousins. This time, however, the Vikings likely won’t turn to J.J. McCarthy if Murray delivers a season similar to Darnold’s.

Murray enters training camp as the clear favorite to win the starting job and is widely expected to open the season as Minnesota’s Week 1 quarterback. McCarthy, however, won’t back down without a fight, setting the stage for an intriguing quarterback competition this summer.
