From floaty mesh to relaxed silhouettes, these are the standout ways to perfect your New Year’s Eve look for the year ahead.
Last year belonged to oversized bows and bold festive embellishments but for the end of 2025, it’s all about texture. Sheer fabrics, velvet, silk and soft metallics are dominating the spotlight as party season reaches its peak.
New Year’s Eve fashion always seems to split people in two: those who carefully plan every detail weeks ahead, and those who rummage for something sparkly five minutes before leaving the house. But according to celebrity stylists, this year’s key trends work for both camps and can be dressed up or down with ease.
Whether you’re clinking glasses in a packed bar or winding down with a film at home, here’s how the style experts say to dress for the arrival of 2026.
1. Liquid Metallics
Image consultant and personal stylist Oriona Robb says the biggest shift this year is toward what she calls wearable glamour.
Rather than eye-catching novelty sparkle, the focus is now on elegant, timeless pieces that still feel festive. “It’s about clothes that feel special but also last beyond one night,” she explains. “Textures are doing the heavy lifting this year — liquid gold, soft pewter, brushed silver finishes, metallic knits and satin sheens.”
The defining difference for 2025 is restraint. “The shimmer is still there, but it’s far more refined,” Robb says. “Think soft metallic dresses, skirts that catch the light as you move, and fluid, sculptural jewellery instead of harsh shine.”
Silhouettes are also more organic this season, with soft draping echoing the molten quality of the fabrics.
2. Elevated Loungewear
For anyone staying in whether you’re hosting friends or embracing a quiet night luxury comfort is the standout trend.
“Fabric choice makes all the difference,” Robb explains. “We’re seeing cashmere lounge sets, ribbed knit dresses, silk-blend trousers and rich velvet layers that make even a night at home feel like a special occasion.”
Her go-to styling trick is adding just one finishing touch to lift the whole look. “A velvet slipper, glossy lipstick or statement earrings instantly gives that New Year’s feel even if you’re staying on the sofa.”
It’s understated, effortless and still quietly glamorous.
3. Relaxed Tailoring
Celebrity stylist Deborah Sheridan-Taylor says fluid, slightly slouchy tailoring is having a major moment this festive season.
For New Year’s Eve, she suggests choosing pieces that feel elegant but easy to wear and endlessly versatile. “An ideal formula is an elevated trouser suit with a draped silk blouse and a sparkling ear cuff,” she says.
Instead of sequins, satin trims and crushed velvet are taking centre stage. “[A] white velvet roll-neck and matching trousers deliver maximum impact with almost no effort,” she adds.
It’s a polished look that feels grown-up without losing its drama.
4. Modern Sheer
Sheer fabrics and mesh might once have been linked to Nineties nightclub fashion, but they’ve since evolved into something far more versatile.
“Silks, sheer chiffons, duchess satin and plush velvet are everywhere across all ages this year,” says Sheridan-Taylor.
If a fully sheer look feels daunting, she suggests using it in subtler ways through layered outerwear, mesh details, sheer panelled accents or even footwear. It’s a way to nod to the trend without feeling overexposed.
5. The Ultimate New Year’s Outfit Formula
Robb keeps her New Year’s styling rule simple:
“I always combine one luminous fabric, one tailored layer and one standout accessory.”
That could be a silk skirt with a structured blazer and bold earrings, or tailored trousers paired with a shimmering blouse and statement necklace. The formula works for everything from formal dinners to relaxed house parties.
