Iran using ceasefire to improve combat power, army spokesperson says

Iran is using the extended ceasefire with the U.S. to bolster its combat power, a senior army official said Tuesday, as President Trump boasts the war has decimated Tehran’s military.

Mohammad Akraminia, chief spokesperson for Iran’s army, said the Islamic republic’s armed forces have treated the ceasefire “as a time of war” and have positioned themselves to respond to future attacks by the U.S. and Israel.

He added that if Iran is attacked again, its armed forces will open “new fronts” with new tools and methods, though he did not detail what those would be.

The comments come after Mr. Trump halted imminent strikes on Iran on Monday, citing requests from Middle East allies and the prospects for a deal that meets U.S. demands to end the war.

Mr. Trump said Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar had told him to have faith in the diplomatic process.

The U.S. and Iran traded peace proposals earlier this week, with both sides stating they remain far apart on the issues of uranium enrichment, sanctions relief and war reparations.

The Persian Gulf states that persuaded Mr. Trump to halt his attack likely stand to lose the most if hostilities resume. During the first leg of the war in March, Iran launched hundreds of missiles and drones at strategic and economic targets in the Gulf states and tightened its grip over the Strait of Hormuz.

The attacks severely damaged energy infrastructure in the UAE and Saudi Arabia, and the closure of the strait has put intense pressure on the oil-reliant Gulf economy.

Still, U.S. defense officials have insisted that Iran’s military capabilities have been severely degraded by joint U.S.-Israeli strikes, making retaliatory efforts ineffective.
