Chris Boswell is staying in Pittsburgh. The veteran kicker agreed to a four-year, $28 million extension with the Steelers, according to ESPN‘s Adam Schefter – a deal that ties him with Dallas Cowboys kicker Brandon Aubrey for the highest average annual salary ever paid to an NFL kicker.
It’s a remarkable outcome for a player who wasn’t even drafted.
After going undrafted in 2014, Boswell failed to make the roster with both the Houston Texans and New York Giants before Pittsburgh gave him a shot in 2015. The Steelers were dealing with injuries at the position, and trade acquisition Josh Scobee wasn’t getting the job done. They signed Boswell that October – and never looked back.
He converted over 90 percent of his field goal attempts in that first season alone. In the 11 years since, he’s posted a 90-plus percent conversion rate in seven of them, finishing his career with an overall field goal percentage of 87.7 – sixth-highest in NFL history.
A Late-Career Peak
Boswell made his first Pro Bowl back in 2017, but his 2024 season may have been the best of his career. He led the entire NFL with 41 made field goals, earning his second Pro Bowl selection and his first-ever All-Pro nod – at 34 years old.
The extension keeps Boswell under contract in Pittsburgh through the 2030 NFL season. He’ll be 35 when the deal kicks in, meaning this could very well be the last contract he ever signs.
For a guy who couldn’t make an NFL roster a decade ago, that’s not a bad place to end up.
