A Deep Dive Look at the Reunion Kaitlyn Dever Surprises Tim Allen on the Set of Shifting Gears

Four years after Last Man Standing took its final bow, fans were treated to a genuinely touching off camera reunion between two of the sitcom’s most beloved stars: Tim Allen and Kaitlyn Dever. And while the emotional moment didn’t appear in an episode of Allen’s new Fox series Shifting Gears, it played out live in front of a studio audience who instantly understood the significance.

A Surprise Years in the Making

On this particular shoot day, the Shifting Gears cast and crew were preparing to film a light comedic kitchen scene  nothing out of the ordinary. Tim Allen, now fully settled into his new character and on-screen family, rounded the corner of the set expecting to see his current TV daughter, Kat Dennings, in character and raiding the fridge.

What he found instead was a familiar presence from another era of his television life.

Kaitlyn Dever, who played the fierce, independent, sharp-witted Eve Baxter on Last Man Standing, suddenly appeared from behind the refrigerator door. She popped up with a wide grin just as Allen walked in  and for a moment, he was visibly stunned. His step slowed, his eyes widened, and then came the unmistakable “Tim Allen” laugh as recognition washed over him.

The studio audience instantly erupted. People jumped to their feet, cheering, clapping, and hollering as the two embraced. It wasn’t just a quick hug  Allen pulled her in with genuine emotion, the kind you only see when two people who once played family reconnect unexpectedly.

A Reunion Recorded and Celebrated

The entire moment was captured on video and posted by the official Shifting Gears Instagram page, where commenters immediately swarmed in with nostalgia and excitement.

In the clip, after Dever reveals herself, the audience warm-up host steps forward, laughing and announcing to everyone:

“Yes, you’re seeing this right. That is the incredible Kaitlyn Dever!”

Dever then moves to hug Dennings, her successor in the “TV daughter” role, creating a sweet symbolic passing-of-the-torch moment. Allen can’t help himself  he pulls her in for a second hug before she finally heads backstage, laughing and waving to the cheering crowd.

The energy in the room clearly shifted  the audience was buzzing with nostalgia, the actors were smiling ear to ear, and the crew members were visibly touched. It felt less like a cameo and more like a reunion of a real family.

Why This Reunion Matters

Tim Allen and Kaitlyn Dever built a strong on-screen father-daughter bond during nine seasons of Last Man Standing. Eve Baxter was the military-minded, straightforward, tough-love youngest daughter  the one Mike Baxter often related to the most. Fans loved their scenes together, especially their heartfelt moments amid the comedy.

Seeing them reunite spontaneously and without TV cameras rolling for an episode  brought all of that back.

A Look Back at Their Last Appearance Together

Before this surprise, Allen and Dever had last “appeared together” in the 2021 Last Man Standing finale. However, Dever wasn’t physically present for those scenes.

At the time, she was filming the movie adaptation of Dear Evan Hansen, and strict COVID protocols made it impossible for her to join the cast in person. She filmed her final scene separately, appearing only via FaceTime, which disappointed many fans hoping for a group send-off.

Executive producer Kevin Abbott later explained:

  • Dever could appear in front of the masked crew

  • The cast, however, could not be masked

  • And there wasn’t time to quarantine or safely integrate her into in-person shooting

This made the 2025 reunion feel even more meaningful  it was the first true in-person interaction between Allen and Dever on set since before the pandemic-era finale.

A Moment Fans Won’t Forget

The reunion clip spread quickly across social media, with fans sharing memories of Eve Baxter and celebrating Dever’s skyrocketing career. Now an Emmy-nominated star thanks to her acclaimed work on Hulu’s Dopesick and HBO’s The Last of Us, Dever has become one of TV and film’s most respected young actresses. Yet returning to see Tim Allen clearly meant something special.
