Gemini Surges 13% After Securing Landmark CFTC Approval for U.S. Prediction Market

Gemini, the cryptocurrency exchange founded by Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss, experienced a sharp 13% jump in its share price after the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) granted approval for the company to launch a regulated prediction market in the United States. The approval marks one of Gemini’s most significant regulatory achievements to date and signals a major shift in the rapidly expanding prediction market industry.

This development comes after years of regulatory uncertainty for U.S.-based prediction platforms. Gemini’s newly authorized market will allow users to speculate on various real-world outcomes ranging from political events to sports, economics, entertainment, and more by trading simple yes-or-no contracts directly on the exchange.

A Milestone Five Years in the Making

In its official announcement on December 10, Gemini described the CFTC approval as the culmination of a lengthy and rigorous licensing process that stretched across half a decade. According to the company, U.S. customers will soon be able to place predictions using USD on Gemini’s web interface, with mobile support expected shortly afterward.

Tyler Winklevoss, Gemini co-founder and CEO, framed the regulatory green light as a breakthrough moment:

“Today’s approval marks the culmination of a 5-year licensing process and the beginning of a new chapter for Gemini,” he stated.
He went on to credit what he described as a more crypto-friendly political environment:
“We thank President Trump for ending the Biden Administration’s War on Crypto and Acting Chairman Caroline Pham for helping realize the vision of making America the crypto capital of the world.”

Cameron Winklevoss echoed his brother’s praise, emphasizing the CFTC’s shift toward innovation under Acting Chair Pham. He noted that prediction markets have the potential to rival the size of traditional financial markets and pointed out that regulatory support will be a key driver for U.S. leadership in this sector.

Gemini’s Broader Vision: Building a Crypto Super App

The introduction of prediction markets brings Gemini closer to its stated goal of becoming a comprehensive crypto “super app.” During its third-quarter earnings call, the company highlighted its long-term strategy of creating more in-house solutions rather than depending on external service providers. This vertical integration gives Gemini more control over security, innovation, and product development especially in emerging sectors like decentralized finance (DeFi), lending, and now prediction markets.

Prediction markets, in particular, have gained massive popularity in recent years due to their ability to provide real-time insight into public expectations around major events. By joining this space with regulatory approval, Gemini positions itself as a serious competitor against both established platforms and newer market entrants.

A Rapidly Growing and Intensifying Competitive Landscape

While Gemini’s entry marks a significant milestone, it also places the exchange into one of crypto’s most competitive and fast-evolving sectors.

Currently, Kalshi and Polymarket dominate prediction market activity:

  • Kalshi holds the leading position in the U.S. due to its existing regulatory approval.

  • Polymarket, although previously restricted in the U.S. due to regulatory issues, was recently cleared by the CFTC to resume U.S. operations, creating a powerful resurgence that has driven record monthly volumes.

Both companies have benefited from major partnerships and integrations with global brands, including Google, X (formerly Twitter), and UFC, which have collectively expanded user participation and market liquidity.

Monthly prediction market volumes have surged dramatically since mid-2025, indicating that user adoption is accelerating as regulatory clarity improves. This growth signals a substantial opportunity for Gemini, yet it also underscores the increasingly fierce competition it now faces.

New Entrants Crowd the Field

Beyond the established players, several heavyweight companies have also begun entering the prediction market arena:

  • Robinhood Markets, which partnered with Kalshi earlier this year, reported that prediction markets are now among its fastest-growing business segments.

  • Fanatics, one of the world’s largest sports platforms, joined the industry through a partnership with Crypto.com—indicating growing interest in bridging sports fandom and event-based predictions.

  • Binance, the world’s largest crypto exchange, announced a new prediction platform called Predict.fun, launched on the BNB Chain.

Binance founder Changpeng Zhao (CZ) revealed that Predict.fun was developed by a former Binance employee and shaped by YZi Labs, CZ’s family office. He emphasized that the platform will allow users to earn yield on funds used for prediction contracts—a response to long-standing concerns about idle capital in traditional prediction systems.

This yield-focused innovation is not limited to Binance. Both Polymarket and Kalshi have recently introduced reward mechanisms, treasury incentives, loyalty points, and layered staking systems to enhance user engagement.

What Gemini’s Entry Means for the Industry

Gemini’s approval marks a turning point for regulated prediction markets in the United States. Unlike many decentralized prediction markets operating internationally, Gemini brings:

  • strict regulatory compliance

  • institutional-grade custody infrastructure

  • brand trust built through nearly a decade of operation

  • a large existing user base

  • direct access to U.S. retail customers under a clear legal framework

These advantages position Gemini to compete aggressively in a space where legitimacy and compliance have become major differentiators.

The approval also suggests that U.S. regulators may now be more open to prediction markets as a legitimate financial product rather than a gray-area betting tool. If more platforms receive similar regulatory treatment, prediction markets could evolve from niche applications into mainstream financial instruments.

A Strong Start, But Challenges Ahead

Although Gemini’s 13% share surge reflects investor optimism, the company will need to execute flawlessly across several fronts:

  • user acquisition in an already crowded market

  • mobile integration, which is essential for mass adoption

  • innovation to differentiate itself from established platforms

  • robust liquidity to ensure efficient trading

  • maintaining compliance while innovating quickly

Nevertheless, this regulatory victory represents one of the biggest steps forward for Gemini since its launch and places the company at the forefront of a potentially multi-billion-dollar sector.
