Carli Lloyd doesn’t hold back on USA, Christian Pulisic after World Cup exit

Carli Lloyd was among those unhappy with how the USA performed in their embarrassing 4-1 loss to Belgium in the World Cup Round of 16 on Monday in Dallas, Texas.

The USWNT legend criticized the Stars and Stripes’ body language even before the knockout match started. Lloyd also sounded off on Christian Pulisic, who never really got it going for the USA throughout the quadrennial tournament.

“It’s a bit of a downer for us being out here now after this loss, but I just felt like they lost the game before they even stepped out onto the pitch. I’m not sure why, and I don’t know the reasons. But just from the beginning, just chasing, tentative, scared, just not confident on the ball, and I think big-time players, you wanted some of those big-time players to step up in big moments,” Lloyd stated.

“I was a bit disappointed with Christian Pulisic. Whether he wants to be the star of this team or not, we didn’t see enough from him in this particular game, and really the whole World Cup, little glimpses here and there,” she added.

Christian Pulisic suffers new injury during blowout loss to Belgium

Christian Pulisic went out on a whimper in his final World Cup contest against Belgium, as the AC Milan forward was subbed off before the hour mark after a heavy challenge from Youri Tielemans in the 54th minute. After initially staying down following the play, Pulisic tried to play through his ankle knock but was limping. He was visibly emotional when he left the pitch.

“It’s just frustrating to end like that, of course,” Pulisic told reporters postgame. “Now I have time to rest, so it’ll be OK.”

“It’s been such an incredible journey this summer. Yeah, I just never wanted it to end, so I’m just so thankful to all of the American people that supported us and gave us that boost. It was awesome. Definitely a summer I’ll never forget. We need to get over that next hurdle… trying to compete and beat the world’s best. That’s the next step for us,” he added.

Pulisic sustained a calf injury during the USA’s opening match against Paraguay, came off at halftime, and didn’t return to action until the second half of their group-stage finale against Turkiye. He will finish his second World Cup with one assist in four matches.
