The Hinge Prompts (and Responses) That Helped Me Land Dates With Both Men and Women

In today’s world of digital dating, creating the perfect Hinge profile can feel daunting, and if I’m being honest, like a totally hopeless task. I wish I could tell you that your profile doesn’t matter or that people aren’t using dating apps anymore, but the hard truth is that your Hinge profile is your first and sometimes only chance to make an impression on Mr. or Miss Right. That’s exactly why something seemingly simple, like choosing Hinge prompts and responses, can feel so do-or-die.
According to a study conducted by Hinge, someone’s digital body language (the non-verbal subtext of digital interactions, such as emojis, punctuation, message length, and response time) and the impressions we get from their profile are what we consider most before deciding to move forward with them. (If you’ve ever gotten the ick from an aggressive overuse of emojis or tried to decipher someone’s dating values through their lack of punctuation, you know what I mean.) How we present our profile matters and can make all the difference in whether we find date-worthy matches.
As the token bisexual of my friend group, I inadvertently embarked on an unofficial two-year-long quest to understand how to position my profile for men and women. My research paid off tenfold since one of many matches along the way turned into a few dates and is now a partner I live with. Because of this, I consider myself an expert on this topic, and I have one simple piece of advice for anyone looking to find date-worthy matches: The right prompts can lead to the right dates. I’ve learned what works (and what doesn’t) through real experience, and now, I’m explaining how you can use these insights to improve your own Hinge prompts and boost your chances of finding meaningful matches.
Introduction to Hinge: What makes Hinge different?
If you’re new to the world of online dating or just looking to increase your odds of finding a partner, Hinge is the dating app that’s all about helping you find something real. I know, I know, that’s what they all say. But unlike other dating apps that can feel like a never-ending swipe fest, Hinge is designed to get you off the app and into real life with someone who genuinely wants a long-term relationship. They succeed at this by offering a variety of ways for people to get to know each other through prompts. Think: written prompts, voice prompts, and video prompts. On Hinge, it’s easy to show off your personality and connect with other people who are looking for more than just a casual fling.
Hinge encourages users to get creative with their profiles, using prompts to spark conversation and highlight what makes them unique. Whether you’re answering a quirky question or recording a voice prompt, the app gives you plenty of ways to express yourself and attract people who match your energy. By focusing on meaningful connections and giving you the tools to showcase your real self, Hinge stands out as one of the best dating apps for anyone ready to find love—or at least go on a really memorable first date.

What are online dating app prompts?
In 2026, online dating has a staggering 350 million users worldwide—so rest assured, you’re in good company. The silver lining? Dating apps always evolve and create new ways to interact with fellow users so you don’t feel like you’re yelling into the abyss. Prompts, in general, help spark conversation and help users show off their personalities, while also allowing you to highlight green flags you seek in potential partners. In addition to preset options within the app, Hinge lets you add interactive prompt polls, video prompts, or voice prompts—all of which offer fun ways to stand out. You can also write your own unique responses to prompts, allowing your personality to shine through and making your profile more memorable.
What types of prompts should you use?
After you’ve set up the basics like your name, age, and location, Hinge gives you the option to answer three prompts. Written Hinge prompts are capped at 150 words, and voice and video prompts are capped at 30 seconds. Not a lot of time to show off your personality, right? Well, that’s why you have to get both creative and strategic. To attract the right person, you should choose the prompts that feel true to you and give responses that will make other users want to know more about you. This can help ensure you and your match are on the same page.
“Using generic or tryhard responses is the wrong approach—being genuine and authentic is key to standing out.”
In my experience, men are more likely to engage with interactive polls, whereas women are more likely to engage with voice and video prompts. Interestingly, I noticed that, inversely, women were more likely to have polls on their profiles, and men were more likely to include a voice prompt. With these things in mind, you can craft your prompts accordingly. But don’t worry, you can’t really mess it up. No matter what you decide to use or who you are trying to attract, prompts make it easy to start a conversation and connect with someone new. Plus, they are just downright flirty, fun, and interesting.

How to use voice and video prompts
In my opinion, some of the best Hinge responses come from voice and video dating app prompts. Voice prompts are 30-second audio clips that can be used to answer a question, while video prompts are a way to get to know someone better before meeting up.
One thing I love about using voice and video prompts is that they allow potential matches to hear your voice and see your mannerisms, which can create a stronger connection than through messages or small talk alone. When using voice prompts, choose a question that lets you show off your sense of humor or share a fact about yourself. For example, you could answer a prompt like “The best advice I’ve ever received…” with a lighthearted yet insightful response.
Video prompts, on the other hand, are perfect for showcasing your hobbies or interests. You could use a video prompt to give a quick tour of your favorite hiking spot or show off your cooking skills. The key is to be authentic and let your personality shine through. Honestly sharing your thoughts and experiences in voice or video prompts can make your profile more relatable. These prompts can make your profile stand out and give other people a better sense of who you are.

Crafting effective Hinge prompts
Crafting effective Hinge prompts is crucial to showcasing your personality, interests, and values. A well-crafted prompt can help initiate conversations, assess compatibility, and increase your chances of getting matches. Using generic or tryhard responses is the wrong approach—being genuine and authentic is key to standing out. The right prompt can not only break the ice but also reveal your sense of humor, spark curiosity, or even invite a friendly debate.
Choosing the right prompts
Choosing the right dating app prompts comes down to how you want to be perceived. That might sound a little shallow, but it’s true: Your prompts are your first impression. How do you want a potential Hinge match to react when they see your prompt? Are you looking for someone who laughs at your jokes, can match your intellectual freak, or instantly feels a connection to your personality? All of this should inform the Hinge prompt that you choose.
You should also think about what you’re looking for in a potential partner. Including prompts about your life goals or non-negotiable values can help attract like-minded matches who share your aspirations or respect your boundaries. After all, if you want a travel buddy, choosing a prompt like “This year I really want to…fly to Greece” is going to be a lot more effective than “Dating me is like…dating someone who loves to be out of town half the year.”
“The more you share about your life, the easier it is for others to find common ground and connect with you on a deeper level.”
Writing engaging responses
When writing responses to prompts, focus on being positive and highlighting what you want to talk about. Instead of writing a basic answer to the question, use the prompt as an opportunity to start a conversation and show off your personality. After all, the goal is to spark interest and to get your match to want to know more about you, not give everything away. You can be a little coy with your response to any given prompt. For example, responding “I bet you can’t guess” to the prompt “A shower thought I recently had” is sure to spark a conversation or two and show that you have a silly personality. Customize sample answers to reflect your own personality and add them to your profile.
Hinge prompts and responses for attracting men and women
With my dating apps set to both men and women, I found that there are topics and prompts that men were more likely to respond to versus topics that women were more likely to respond to. In my experience, men were more likely to respond to pictures of my pets, discuss love languages, or respond to shared hobbies. On the other hand, women were more likely to engage with astrology, pictures with friends, and any prompt on my dating values.
For example, one prompt I enjoyed using was “Dating me is like binge-watching your favorite comfort show—predictable, a little quirky, and always there when you need a laugh.” I also loved a playful prompt like “One thing I hate is when people eat ranch with pizza.” These types of responses helped show off my personality and sense of humor.
On the flip side, you can also choose prompts that highlight your more serious side or unique interests, depending on what you want to attract. Over time, profiles and responses naturally evolve until eventually, you find the right person for you. Below, I’ve outlined some of my favorite tried-and-true Hinge prompts and the responses I used (and had success with) based on who I was trying to attract at the time.
1. “First round is on me if…”
Response to attract women: “You can guess my coffee order.”
As a coffee aficionado, this one’s a personal favorite and a great way to share simple pleasures that can lead to meaningful connections. While most men didn’t quite get it right, many women did, and it often opened the door to coffee dates.
Response to attract men: “You can beat me in darts.”
From my experience, men respond well to friendly competition. Whether darts, UNO, or Jenga, incorporating competition can lead to flirty banter and set the perfect stage for a fun first date.
2. “My Ideal Sunday Includes…”
Response to attract women: “A morning walk blasting Harry Styles.”
I truly love a hot girl walk, and this is a playful way to talk about my love for the king of pop.
Response to attract men: “Watching my football team win.”
My inner die-hard Chicago Bear fan always had a mention of football on my profile, not only as a way to screen opposing team matches but as a way to start (usually friendly) trash talk.

3. “You should go out with me to save me from…”
Response to attract anyone: “Being a 5th wheel with my friends.”
This was my favorite and most successful response to the prompt. EVERYONE on dating apps can, unfortunately, relate to the humbling 3rd wheel experience. Both men and women found it relatable and an easy way to spark conversation. What better way to relate to cynical single people than to joke about it together?
4. “I want someone who…”
Response to attract anyone: “will help plan my Halloween costumes in August.”
In a sea of profiles, something that always stands out is current content. Whether you mention an upcoming holiday or your favorite holiday tradition, this is a great way to show others that you are active and keep your profile current. Thanks to this prompt and a random Hinge match, I got the idea for one of my favorite Halloween costumes to date.
5. “My love language is…”
Response to attract women: “A perfectly curated charcuterie board.”
I strongly believe that everyone can make a charcuterie board, but it takes a special kind of artistic talent to curate a great charcuterie board. Knowing how someone creates their charcuterie boards says a lot about them and their unusual skills. Personally, I couldn’t trust someone who didn’t include multiple kinds of cheese.
Response to attract men: “Finding my new favorite dive bar.”
This prompt was almost too easy. It regularly sparked conversations on local dive bars and almost always ended with a date to prove dive bar seniority. Not only is this a near-guaranteed date prompt, but it is a great way to gather bar recommendations.
6. “I could stay up all night talking about…”
Response to attract women: “Books that were better than their movie adaptations.”
It’s been a long few years of book-to-movie adaptations, and the girls have opinions. From Wuthering Heights to Project Hail Mary, there’s endless yap sessions ahead. Plus, this is a great way to connect with a person who also enjoys movies or reading.
Response to attract men: “Outer space being endless.”
Even if it’s about something silly, this prompt is a great way to chat with people about conspiracy theories, the idea of an ever-expanding universe, or just things that you’re passionate about. I found that men, in particular, eat this up.
7. “Don’t hate me if I…”
Response to attract anyone: “Am funnier than you.”
I’ve found that this prompt gets me an insane amount of responses—everyone likes to think that they’re a funny person. If you have a dry sense of humor like me, it’s a great way to find someone who gets your jokes and obscure TikTok references. Bonding over humor is a really great way to connect with someone, even if it’s just on a friendly level. Besides, sometimes friendship is the best foundation for a relationship anyway.
Tips for sharing personal stories
One of the best ways to stand out on Hinge is by sharing personal stories through your prompts. Instead of sticking to generic answers, use prompts like “Typical Sunday” or “Best travel story” to give someone a glimpse into your real life. Maybe your typical Sunday involves a marathon of your favorite movies, or your best travel story includes a spontaneous thing you did in a new city. These details can help spark genuine conversation.

Don’t be afraid to get a little creative or even silly. Share your best celebrity impression, an unusual skill you’re proud of, or a favorite line from a movie that sums up your vibe. If you’ve got a controversial opinion or a self-care routine that’s a bit out of the ordinary, let it shine! Prompts like “Quick rant,” “Biggest date fail,” “Dating me is like,” or “Most spontaneous thing I’ve done” are perfect for showing off your sense of humor and making it easy for someone to start a conversation with you.
The more you share about your life, the easier it is for others to find common ground and connect with you on a deeper level. Whether it’s a random fact, a travel tip, or a story about your greatest strength, using prompts to tell your story is the key to making your Hinge profile memorable.
Online dating strategies
Online dating can be overwhelming and exhausting, but with the right strategies, you can increase your chances of success. Here are some tips for creating an effective profile, getting more matches, and using Hinge prompts to your advantage.
- Be thoughtful about what prompts you’re using. Really think about what you’re looking for in a potential partner when you craft your prompts. After all, this is how you’re going to meet someone who actually vibes with and appreciates your personality! You’re a funny, engaging person with cool interests. Hinge prompts are your chance to show that.
- Make sure your profile pictures are clear and varied. Include a mix of solo shots, photos with friends, and pictures that showcase your hobbies or interests. This gives someone a well-rounded view of who you are.
- Be active on the app. Yeah, leaving your love life up to an algorithm is freaky, but it’s what we’ve gotta do for love! The more active you are on Hinge or your dating app of choice, the more success you’re going to have. So, regularly update your profile, respond to messages promptly, and engage with new matches. This shows that you’re serious about finding a connection and keeps your profile fresh and interesting.
By following these strategies, you can make the most of your experience and increase your chances of finding a meaningful connection.
The most important thing to remember when using dating app prompts
No matter who you are trying to appeal to with your profile and prompts, be authentic to who you are and the kind of relationship you are looking for. Luckily, according to a Stanford University study, more American couples now meet online than through other means, including mutual friends. So statistically speaking, no matter how witty, flirty, or boring your prompts are, the odds are in your favor.
With that said, have fun with it! Online dating can be overwhelming and exhausting. Allow your prompts to bring a little lightheartedness to your experience. Remember, they can always be changed, and they are only meant to start a conversation. Maybe you’ll meet your forever person, or maybe you’ll have a funny story to tell your girlfriends the next time you meet up to laugh about the highs and the lows of online dating over a few glasses of wine.
A final word of advice
At the end of the day, the best Hinge prompts and responses are the ones that feel true to you. Online dating is all about putting your real self out there, enjoying the process, and not being afraid to get a little creative. Whether you’re sharing your love language, a favorite movie quote, or a quick rant about your biggest date fail, remember that authenticity is crucial.
Don’t stress about getting every answer perfect, either. Dating apps are meant to help you connect with more people who appreciate your uniqueness. Keep experimenting with different prompts, update your profile as your life evolves, and most importantly, enjoy it. With the right mix of honesty, humor, and a dash of creativity, you’ll be well on your way to finding someone worth getting off the apps for.
