Reports: Chiefs restructure Mahomes contract, open up cap space

The Kansas City Chiefs suddenly have some breathing room.

Star quarterback Patrick Mahomes agreed to a contract restructure on Wednesday, creating $43.65 million in cap space for the Chiefs, ESPN reported.

The restructuring converts $54.45 million of Mahomes’ 2026 salary into a signing bonus, lowering his cap number to $34.65 million.

Kansas City had been more than $57 million above the cap.

The Chiefs missed the playoffs last season after three straight Super Bowl appearances. Mahomes tore his ACL late in the year and had surgery in December, putting the start to his 2026 season in jeopardy.
