The initial assessment of Brendan Rodgers’ shoulder injury is not what he or the Boston Red Sox hoped.

Rodgers, who left a game between the Red Sox and Minnesota Twins last Wednesday with right shoulder soreness, has undergone both an MRI and a CT scan since then.
The initial read on the injury “doesn’t look great,” manager Alex Cora told the Boston Globe’s Tim Healey and other reporters in the team’s spring training camp.
“Most likely he’s going to end up in surgery,” Cora said, via Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald. “What type of surgery? I don’t know. We’ll wait and see what he has to say but that’s probably what’s going to happen.”
Cora said that Rodgers will fly to California to get a second opinion from renowned sports physician Dr. Neal ElAttrache.
In February the Red Sox signed Rodgers, a veteran of seven MLB seasons, to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.
Last year with the Houston Astros, Rodgers slashed .191/.266/.278 in 43 games.
From 2019-24 with the Colorado Rockies, Rodgers hit .266/.316/.409 with 45 home runs and 197 RBIs. He won a Gold Glove Award in 2022 as the Rockies’ primary second baseman.
