New York Jets make decision on Justin Fields

The NFL’s new league year is approaching, and teams are making moves to be cap compliant. Not only that, they are preparing to create more cash for free agents.

The New York Jets went through a major overhaul in the middle of the season in 2025. They have now made a decision on a once-prized free agent acquisition.

Reports have surfaced that the New York Jets will be releasing quarterback Justin Fields. However, it will be a delayed process.

The team reportedly is working on retaining backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor. If they end up getting him signed to a new deal sooner rather than later, Fields, too, will be gone soon.

Fields joined the Jets last offseason as part of an organizational overhaul. He was Aaron Glenn’s pick at quarterback after sending veteran Aaron Rodgers packing.

Things got off to a promising start after Fields led the Jets to 32 points in a loss in week one to his former team. Things unraveled very quickly from there.

Fields’ release will only provide $1M in cap relief. If the Jets elected to designate him as a Post-June 1 release, however, they could save $10M this year by spreading the hit out.

The timing is unclear, but one thing is for sure: Fields will be one-and-done in New York.
