A longtime illegal immigrant who’d been ordered deported but never went home cast ballots in every presidential election from 2008 to 2024, federal authorities said in court documents unsealed Thursday.
Mahady Sacko, a citizen of Mauritania, was first ordered deported in 2000 but never left. In 2007 he was arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, which tried to deport him, but his passport was no longer current and Mauritania refused to issue one.
ICE decided it had to release him, and ordered him to check in regularly.
He did — but at the same time he was also registered and voting, authorities said.
State and local records showed he cast ballots in the 2008 general election, the 2012 general election, the primary and general election in 2016, the primary and general election in 2020, and the 2024 general election.
“On each occasion, Sacko falsely represented that he was a U.S. citizen,” FBI Special Agent Mickel McGann said in court documents.
All but one of those ballots was cast in person.
Agent McGann said Mr. Sacko also seemed to re-register often.
His first registration was recorded in 2005. He then re-registered twice in 2006, once in 2008, twice in 2012, three times in 2016, once in 2019, twice in 2020 and once in 2024.
He has only been charged with one count of fraudulent voting.
His case comes as Republicans on Capitol Hill are pushing legislation that would require proof of citizenship before a voter can register.
Mr. Sacko is at least the fourth noncitizen charged with illegal voting so far this year.
Agent McGann said Mr. Sacko, 50, entered the U.S. in 1998 and was first put into deportation proceedings in 1999.
