Charlie McAvoy spoke openly about the pride of representing the United States during a recent appearance on The Pat McAfee Show.
The Boston Bruins defenseman reflected on the emotional difference between playing in the NHL wearing a Bruins jersey and wearing the national jersey. His comments came after Team USA’s dramatic run at the 2026 Winter Olympics.
On Wednesday, host Pat McAfee praised the intensity of the Olympic gold medal game during the conversation. He said the matchup drew viewers who rarely watch hockey and created a powerful moment for the sport. He also described fans waking up early across the country to watch the game.

McAvoy agreed and said the experience felt special for the entire roster.
“It’s unbelievable,” McAvoy said. “I think that’s why when we’ve had these conversations amongst the group and amongst guys like, you know, it’s hard to put into words the difference between putting on a Bruins jersey, which I take so much pride in. I love the city of Boston. Like I’m here now. I raised my family here. I love it.
“But it’s just something different about putting on that Team USA jersey. It just means everything.”
The defenseman also described how the tournament united hockey fans across rival markets.
“You’re playing for those people that are going to tune in and give you all their love and support because they’re American,” McAvoy said. “And that’s what we share. And like that’s what makes it so unbelievable. Like no matter where you are in America, like we’re all one. We’re all one.
“You’re not rooting for the Bruins or the Penguins or the Flyers. Like we’re just one for two weeks in February. And like that, man, it doesn’t get any better than that. Like, it’s just amazing how it all played out. It really is.”

McAvoy played a major role in Team USA’s gold medal campaign. The United States captured its first Olympic men’s hockey gold since the Miracle on Ice in 1980. McAvoy logged an average of 19:29 minutes and served as a shutdown defender throughout the tournament.
One of the biggest moments came during the gold medal game against Canada. McAvoy made a key goal-line save when Connor Hellebuyck was out of position. The play helped keep the game tied before the Americans secured the victory, with Jack Hughes’ overtime goal.
