One of the biggest moments of the 2026 Olympic Winter Games in Milan/Cortina d’Ampezzo was when the United States won the gold medal in women’s hockey on February 19. In a dramatic gold medal game, the United States beat Canada 2-1 in overtime on a game-winning goal by Megan Keller of Farmington Hills, Michigan.
Keller’s overtime winner came from Taylor Heise of Lake City, Minnesota at 4:07 of the extra period. Keller, the Boston Fleet defenseman had a multi-point game. She set up Hilary Knight of Palo Alto, California with two minutes and four minutes left in the third period to tie the game at one.
Donald Trump’s reaction to American gold in women’s hockey
After the United States won the gold medal in women’s hockey for the third time ever (also won at the 1998 Olympic Winter Games in Nagano and the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang), United States president Donald Trump had the following comments:
“I must tell you, we’re going to have to bring the women’s team. (If we don’t) I do believe I probably would be impeached.”
Knight heard the comments and said the following:
“We’re just focusing on celebrating the women in our room, the extraordinary efforts, and continue to celebrate three gold medals in program history as well as the double gold for both men’s and women’s at the same time.”
“And really not detract from that with a distasteful joke….(we are) celebrating all great things that have come out of the Olympics and feeling the love and support and getting back in our respective communities and sharing this journey with them. And that’s what this is all about.”
The United States were second in the overall medal standings with 33 medals. They won 12 gold medals, 12 silver medals, and nine bronze medals.
