Rachel Homan continues to struggle on her sport’s biggest stage.
For the second straight game, Homan’s Canadian rink was upset at the Winter Olympics, losing to Great Britain 7-6 on Saturday.
The game wasn’t as close as the scoreboard indicated.
Homan’s skip stones weren’t good enough. She shot a poor 70 per cent while her teammates shot at least 81 per cent.
Meanwhile, Great Britain fourth Rebecca Morrison played amazing, putting pressure on Homan to make her shots every end.
Every end Canada had a chance to score big, a Homan miss would make them settle for one.Â
Even in the eighth end when the game was still within reach at 5-3, Homan had a chance to sit three without hammer. But she couldn’t make her final shot and handed the Brits two more points.
For Homan, this isn’t something new on the Olympic stage. This is the third Olympics in a row she’s wearing the Maple Leaf. In 2018, she wore it while playing with current third Emma Miskew and their rink in the women’s discipline while in 2022 she played with John Morris in the mixed doubles competition.Â
On both occasions, Homan wasn’t at her best.Â
In 2018, she averaged 78 per cent across nine games and in 2022 (albeit with a different style of play for mixed doubles), she shot 72 per cent in nine games.
Homan and her teammates will be back on the ice at 1:05 p.m. ET / 10:05 a.m. PT (CBC Gem, Sportsnet+) to take on Switzerland’s Team Silvana Tirinzoni, who came into the tournament as their biggest competition to win gold.
Canada’s Team Brad Jacobs is also in action on Saturday to face Switzerland at 8:05 a.m. ET / 5:05 a.m. PT (CBC Gem, Sportsnet+). They will try to stay undefeated after starting the week 3-0.
Jacobs is coming off a feisty match on Friday where Canada’s third Marc Kennedy and Sweden’s third Oskar Eriksson got into a heated exchange after Eriksson accused Kennedy of cheating.
The top four teams in women’s and men’s play will advance to the playoffs after nine round-robin games.
