The Indiana Fever suffered a massive lineup blow, as Caitlin Clark left Wednesday’s game against the Phoenix Mercury with a back injury that she appeared to sustain during the second period.

After drawing a foul from Mercury forward Valeriane Ayayi on a three-point attempt during the second quarter, Clark fell to the ground and rubbed her back as she stood up. She looked uncomfortable walking back to the Fever’s bench, but she still managed to play until the 5:15 mark in the third quarter.

Clark, who was on the receiving end of Alyssa Thomas’ dirty elbow, has been dealing with a back injury for quite some time now, as she was listed as probable for 13 straight injury reports by the Fever, which the WNBA previously warned for improper injury reporting.

The two-time All-Star finished the game with 19 points and eight assists on 5-for-9 shooting from the field in 20 minutes of action. Without Clark, the Fever eventually lost 111-109 to the Mercury.

Before Caitlin Clark left the game against the Phoenix Mercury, the Indiana Fever star had been on a roll, scoring at least 21 points in each of her last six games, including a 32-point game while flirting with a triple-double during their 114-106 overtime win against the Chicago Sky. During this stretch, the Fever won four of their last six games.

Given that Clark has dealt with a back injury for a while, this is extra concerning for the Fever, and all eyes will be on the two-time All-Star in the days ahead. Their next game is against the Los Angeles Sparks on Saturday night.

If Clark won’t be available against the Sparks, the Fever will rely heavily on Aliyah Boston and Kelsey Mitchell. Meanwhile, Raven Johnson, Lexie Hull, and Sophie Cunningham will soak up more playing time.
