How Rosie O’Donnell felt returning to US for Tony Awards after Trump’s citizenship threat

Rosie O’Donnell had concerns about returning to the US for the 2026 Tony Awards after President Trump previously threatened to revoke her citizenship.

The comedian, 64, moved to Ireland with her 13-year-old child, Clay, in January 2025 after Trump won the 2024 presidential election. She was back on US soil Sunday for the Tony Awards and exclusively told Page Six that she made sure she had no issues coming back to America after she taking a secret trip to see her family in February.

“I worried the first time I came back, whether that would be problematic, and I came alone without my child, who is 13 and has autism. She’s my youngest of five,” she told us. “I wanted to make sure that if anything happened, it didn’t happen in her presence, so it was fine — as it should be.”

She added, “I’m an American citizen and always will be, and he can’t really arrest American citizens without cause, and using freedom of speech is not a reason to be arrested in America.”

O’Donnell also talked to us about her decision last month to reveal she got a secret facelift, and explained that she wanted to be truthful — unlike some celebrities.

“Well, a lot of people were saying, ‘What did you do?’ and I didn’t want to be one of those celebrities who has a weight problem their whole life and then suddenly they’re skinny and fit and didn’t admit it’s Mounjaro.”

“I didn’t want to do that to people who are obese and struggling [and thinking], ‘Why can’t I do it,’ you know? So I just wanted to tell the truth,” she continued.

O’Donnell doesn’t regret her pricey facelift, but admitted she wouldn’t do it again.

“I’ll be 75 in 10 or 12 years. At 75, I think I’ll say ‘no,’ but I love my doctor, and I love doing it,” she said.

In February, O’Donnell talked about making a secret return to the US for two weeks during her appearance on “SiriusXM’s Cuomo Mornings.”

“I wanted to see how hard it would be for me to get in and out of the country,” she shared. “I wanted to feel what it felt like. I wanted to hold my children again. And I hadn’t been home in over a year.”

“I also wanted to make sure that it was safe for me before I brought my daughter this summer, where we plan to spend the summertime off from her schooling here with my family,” she added.

O’Donnell has been an outspoken critic of Trump for years, but their feud came to a boiling point in July 2025 when Trump wrote on Truth Social, “Because of the fact that Rosie O’Donnell is not in the best interests of our Great Country, I am giving serious consideration to taking away her Citizenship.”

“She is a Threat to Humanity, and should remain in the wonderful Country of Ireland, if they want her. GOD BLESS AMERICA,” he continued.

O’Donnell hit back on her own social media, writing in an Instagram post, “The president of the usa has always hated the fact that i see him for who he is – a criminal con man sexual abusing liar out to harm our nation to serve himself – this is why i moved to ireland.”

She also labeled the president a “dangerous old soulless man with dementia who lacks empathy compassion and basic humanity.”
