President Trump said Monday that talks with Iran remain on track after he spoke to Israel and representatives of the Iran-backed Hezbollah to calm things down in Lebanon, a key sticking point for Tehran.

“Talks are continuing, at a rapid pace, with the Islamic Republic of Iran. Thank you for your attention to this matter!” Mr. Trump said on Truth Social.

Mr. Trump said negotiations are continuing during a head-spinning day in which a semi-official Iranian news agency said Tehran wanted to suspend negotiations because Israel bombarded Hezbollah, Iran’s terror proxy in Lebanon. Iran said it violated the Middle East ceasefire.

Mr. Trump said he spoke to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to ensure that no troops would head toward Beirut, and that any troops en route would turn back.

“Likewise, through highly placed Representatives, I had a very good call with Hezbollah, and they agreed that all shooting will stop — That Israel will not attack them, and they will not attack Israel,” Mr. Trump wrote.

The president dialed down the temperature shortly after telling NBC News it was “fine” if Iran did not want to talk anymore, pointing to the economic pressure of his blockade.

But Mr. Trump’s posts suggest he was at pains to keep negotiations on track and keep Israel in line with his goals after flare-ups in the Middle East threatened his negotiations with Tehran.

The president had been mulling a 60-day memorandum of understanding to lift the U.S. blockade of Iran, reopen the Strait of Hormuz and set the table for nuclear talks.

Mr. Trump wants to ensure that Iran cannot obtain a nuclear weapon as part of any peace deal. However, the U.S. and Iran exchanged fire over the weekend, putting talks on edge, and Israel launched a new assault on Beirut, angering the Iranian side.
