A former member of Germany’s left-wing Red Army Faction terrorist group was sentenced Wednesday to 13 years in prison after she was convicted of armed robberies targeting supermarkets and armored trucks.

Daniela Klette, 67, lived in Berlin under a false identity for more than 30 years until her arrest in February 2024, officials said.

The German TV network DW said she was discovered after an investigative journalist used AI software to compare her current image to that of her wanted poster.

When police raided her apartment, they found false Italian identification documents, firearms, ammunition, explosives, about $280,000 in cash and several gold bars, according to local reports.

Authorities said Ms. Klette and two accomplices who remain at large staged the robberies to support their lifestyle while on the run.

The Red Army Faction, also known as the Baader-Meinhof Gang, conducted a campaign of terror in the former West Germany in the 1970s and 1980s. The radical anti-capitalist group battled what they saw as U.S. imperialism and a “fascist” German state.

Dozens of politically motivated bombings, kidnappings and murders were attributed to the group, which disbanded in April 1998.
