Austria picked up wins in its first two games of group play, putting the team in a strong spot to advance to the quarterfinals of this year’s tournament. If the team achieves that, it would be the second tournament in a row that Austria has advanced to the quarterfinals. The last time the team made back-to-back knockout phases was in the early 2000s, when the tournament format differed.
Switzerland has gotten off to a strong start, winning all three of its games so far. The team is tied with Finland for the best goal differential in Group A. The Swiss team has finished second in back-to-back IIHF World Championships, but is still seeking its first tournament championship. Overall, Switzerland has won silver five times, with four of those coming since 2013.
The IIHF World Championship continues through May 31, with U.S. television coverage on NHL Network. Last year, the United States won the title for the third time, with Switzerland finishing second, Sweden third, and Denmark fourth.
