The North Carolina Tar Heels announced earlier this week the football program will wear 1980 throwback uniforms during a game this fall in celebration of Kenan Memorial Stadium’s 100th season.
The uniforms feature Carolina blue helmets with the stairstep “UNC” logo on the sides, two white stripes flanked by thinner navy blue stripes down the center and a white facemask.
The matching jerseys – though not yet revealed – will display a “Carolina” wordmark across the chest above white numbers outlined in navy blue, while the white pants have the same stripes as the helmet, only inverted.
The 1980 Tar Heels went 11-1 overall, including a victory over Texas in the Astro-Bluebonnet Bowl, to capture the program’s fifth and most recent Atlantic Coast Conference championship.
The team was led by Pro Football Hall of Fame linebacker Lawrence Taylor and head coach Dick Crum, who earned ACC Coach of the Year honors after leading North Carolina to its highest final ranking (No. 10 in the AP Poll) since 1948 (No. 3).
That season marked one of 11 times that North Carolina has finished unbeaten at home dating back to Kenan Stadium’s first game in 1927. The Tar Heels have played 551 games in the venue, compiling a 328-207-16 record.
In addition to the throwback uniforms, North Carolina also revealed a commemorative logo celebrating Kenan Stadium’s 100th season, which prominently displays the Morehead-Patterson Bell Tower inside of the No. 100.
There is also the facade of the stadium nestled among pine trees and a diamond-shaped backdrop that brings to mind the iconic argyle pattern that appears down the center of their standard Carolina blue and white alternate helmets.
“We are excited to recognize 100 seasons of Kenan Stadium by honoring the program’s alumni, elevating the fan experience from pregame to postgame and enhancing our historic facility,” athletic director Steve Newmark said. “As we cheer on the 2026 Tar Heels, we will also commemorate the past while continuing to build toward the future.”
