New York is looking to double up on Philadelphia this week and prove the 76ers’ first-round upset of Boston was little more than an anomaly during this year’s NBA Playoffs. It didn’t take the Knicks long at all to assert some dominance in the Eastern Conference after steamrolling their way to a 137-98 win at Madison Square Garden.
Even with the deluxe trio of Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, and Paul George all on the court for significant minutes in the opening game of the series, the 76ers failed to show out in any consistent way. Embiid and Maxey each overcame the respective recent niggles to feature, while Jeremy Sochan’s absence due to a hamstring injury didn’t impede the Knicks one bit.
The two teams return to MSG on Wednesday as Mike Brown’s stellar defense looks to once again do its job in muting the double tandem of Maxey and Embiid. That work off the ball has allowed the Knicks to build up a combined points differential of 135 over their last four opponents, the largest in NBA playoff history over that span.
Jalen Brunson, who led Game 1 with 35 points and 100% shooting from the free-throw line, has teased the arrival of a reinforced 76ers side when these two teams get reacquainted in Game 2. Anything but could see Philadelphia struggling to keep touch in this series before it even gets back to the Xfinity Mobile Arena last this week.
