Navy secretary out in latest high-level departure from Trump’s Pentagon

Secretary of the Navy John Phelan has stepped down from his position at the Defense Department in the latest high-profile departure by a Trump administration official.

Chief Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell announced Mr. Phelan’s departure in a brief post on X, saying Mr. Phelan was departing the administration “effective immediately.”

“We are grateful to Secretary Phelan for his service to the Department [of the Navy] and the United States Navy,” Mr. Parnell said. “We wish him well in his future endeavors.”

Undersecretary Hung Cao will be the acting Navy secretary in the interim, according to the statement.
