Morgan Rielly addressed growing uncertainty about his future with the Toronto Maple Leafs, offering an honest reflection after what could be his final home appearance this NHL season.
Speaking before Monday’s game against the Dallas Stars, the veteran defenseman made it clear how much the franchise still means to him. He called Toronto an outstanding place to play.
“It’s an outstanding place to play and a great place to live…,” Rielly said. “This organization means a lot to a lot of people, and so to be a part of it, it’s an honor, and I don’t believe that that’s lost on anyone in here.”
Rielly was drafted by the Maple Leafs, fifth overall in the 2012 NHL Draft, and has so far played 949 games, all with the same team. But now his name is circulating in the trade rumors.

Speaking about which, he admitted that he has thought about the Stars game being his last with the Leafs at the Scotiabank Arena.
“It’s crossed my mind before, all athletes you know have that at some point – they think about that, and tonight’s no different than that,” Rielly said.
Rielly’s comments come during a difficult season for the Leafs. The team has struggled badly and is set to miss the playoffs for the first time in nine years. That has fueled speculation about major roster changes, including the possibility of moving the long-time defenseman.
The 31-year-old is under contract through 2029-30 on an eight-year, $60 million deal. The contract includes a full no-move clause, making any trade complex. Still, reports suggest the organization may explore changes to reshape its defense.
On the ice, Rielly has faced a challenging campaign. He posted 36 points in 76 games while logging heavy minutes, but his minus (-17) rating reflects the team’s defensive issues. Despite that, he remains one of the most experienced voices in the locker room.

Forward Matthew Knies also shared his perspective on the situation, highlighting the emotional side of potential changes. He said it would feel strange to see any teammate leave, not just Rielly.
“You can say that about almost every guy in this locker room,” Knies said. “You get so close through the year.
Knies referenced trade deadline departures of Scott Laughton and Bobby McMann, and how they impacted the group.
“We were saying that about Laughton at the trade deadline, too, like he’s only been here for a year,” Knies said. “Bobby McMann, he’s only been here for a few years. It felt weird with those guys not being here. It would be weird to see anyone in a different jersey.”
As the offseason approaches, Rielly’s future remains one of the biggest questions in Toronto.
