The NFL is preparing for the 2026 NFL Draft, and teams have done more than just sign free agents and make trades—they’ve also made difficult roster cuts.
The Detroit Lions are among those teams, making several moves that include parting ways with longtime veterans. One of those veterans appears to believe the organization may have misled him.
Recently released offensive tackle Taylor Decker spoke with Justin Rogers of the Detroit Football Network. Among the topics they discussed, the fallout leading to Decker’s release has drawn significant attention.

According to Rogers, Decker had his exit interview with the organization after the Lions missed the playoffs. When he left that meeting, the message seemed clear: the team wanted him back, and no one mentioned a pay cut.

However, the situation quickly changed. Before the start of the 2026 league year in March, the Lions’ front office approached Decker with a new request—a pay cut.
Despite appearing aligned shortly after the season, something shifted within the organization.
Decker made it clear that the team never brought up a pay cut during his exit interview. That suggests either a breakdown in communication or a change in the team’s plans.

Did the Lions change course? From Decker’s perspective, the request felt disrespectful and suggested the team no longer viewed him as the player he once was.
At 32, that perception isn’t entirely unreasonable. Still, when you consider the optimistic tone of the exit interview and Decker’s public announcement that he planned to return, the reversal felt like a gut punch.
Decker told Rogers he briefly considered accepting the pay cut but ultimately declined. The Lions released him on March 6—a move that, in hindsight, seemed inevitable.
