Edmonton Oilers are facing growing pressure as results and internal frustration begin to draw attention during the 2025-26 NHL season. The team remains in the playoff race, but recent performances have exposed concerns around consistency and structure.
The situation gained more focus after comments from Connor McDavid following a 5-2 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning. McDavid praised Tampa Bay’s system, calling them well-coached and highly organized.
McDavid later clarified he was not criticizing his own team, but the remarks still prompted discussions.

Those comments also linked back to earlier statements from Leon Draisaitl, who had pointed to coaching differences. With Draisaitl currently away, the timing has only added to the sense of tension within the group.
During a recent podcast, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman offered a direct view on the situation. He said he would call a full team meeting once Draisaitl returns from Germany.
“I know what I would do if I ran the Oilers, and I’d wait till Draisaitl gets back ’cause he’s supposed to get back from Germany this week,” Friedman said. “I would say, “Guys, we’re meeting.” It’s either in the dressing room or it’s at a hotel conference room, or they rent a room at dinner, and they do it there.
“And you have all the players, and you have the coaches, and you can even have the executives. And you say, ‘Guys, we’re airing it all out here.’”
Friedman believes that internal communication could help reset the Oilers’ tough season and growing frustration.
Oilers’ late-season inconsistency
On the ice, Edmonton continues to produce offensively, but they have lost four of their last six games. The team averages 3.45 goals per game and remains dangerous on the power play. However, defensive struggles persist, with 3.39 goals allowed per game.
The Oilers hold a 34-28-9 record and sit in a tight playoff race. With limited games remaining, the margin for error is shrinking. Even Draisaitl is out, so losing back-to-back games is not a good sign for their playoff hopes.

As they prepare for their next matchup, the focus remains on finding balance. Whether through internal meetings or improved play, Edmonton needs a response quickly.
