A long-haired paedophile who identifies as a little girl and was allowed to sit in the dock sucking his thumb while wearing a top claiming he was ‘mentally 3-7 years’ has made a ‘mockery of the court’, a law expert has said.

Janiel Verainer, 63, sparked outrage when he appeared at Maidstone Crown Court this week wearing the ‘deeply offensive’ sweatshirt.

The shameless sex offender previously turned up to an earlier court hearing wearing an elf outfit, skirt, white and red stockings and carrying to a pair of toy elves.

Yet despite his outlandish attire, the convicted pervert was not thrown out of court and was instead allowed to remain in the dock on both occasions.

The decision left criminal law expert Paul Schofield appalled.

He told MailOnline: ‘This makes a mockery of the court… This is contempt. It’s wholly disrespectful to the court and the court process and it’s not right.’

How a paedophile made a mockery of the justice system: Convicted sex offender was allowed to sit in dock sucking his thumb with long hair in bunches and a top claiming ‘I am mentally 3-7 years’ because he ‘identified as little girl’

Verainer has been jailed 16 months for breaching a sexual harm prevention order (SHPO). The sex offender previously flouted the conditions of the same SHPO in April 2022 after kissing two children. During those legal proceedings, in which Verainer was handed a seven-month prison term suspended for 18 months, the paedophile made headlines by appearing in the dock dressed as an elf (pictured)

Lawyer Mr Schofield continued: ‘If a judge didn’t like the way someone dressed and found it offensive, then it’s up to the judge to say something. You can’t always say ‘go home and get changed’. It would be a case of your coming back in four weeks.

‘The judge should at least address either the person or their lawyer and get on record the concern… it is very surprising that a judge hasn’t taken action.

‘But it’s just the way it is. It’s just frustrating. But this case in Maidstone is off the scale. It’s offensive.’

The lawyer said there was no ‘hard and fast’ rule when it comes to appropriate attire in court and claimed some defendants just ‘turn up and hope that nobody says anything’.

Mr Schofield added: ‘There are all sorts of religious issues and gender issues, and judges now have to be very careful.

‘A lot of judges are very strict especially on misbehaviour. I don’t know who this judge is or was or any reasons behind it all but at the end of the day. It looks disrespectful.’

He added: ‘I was in another crown (court) yesterday and a youth defendant aged 15 chewing and the judge gave him a right telling off.

‘That’s what we should expect – that sort of respect. The problem is there is no sort of hard and fast guidance.’

And former Tory minister Caroline Dinenage also lashed out, telling MailOnline: ‘I can imagine it’s deeply offensive to the victims that he appears to have so little respect for the nature of his offences or indeed the criminal justice system – that’s reflected in his disregard for the court order.’

While Reform MP Lee Anderson added: ‘If I had my way he’d be wearing a blue suit with white arrows and a ball chain. His days would be then spent breaking rocks at the side of the road. There would be little time for thumb sucking.’

Verainer’s latest court hearing saw him being jailed for breaching a sexual harm prevention order (SHPO), it has emerged.

The 63-year-old sex fiend had been keeping two secret phones in a ‘Hello Kitty’ inspired bedroom, a jury heard. Police found the unregistered devices during a routine check at Verainer’s Kent home in November last year.

The sex offender, whose previous convictions include sexual assault of a child and possessing indecent images, was required to disclose any internet-enabled devices to authorities – but had failed to do so, the court heard.

While the phones had only been used for legal, adult-related content via Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, and eBay, Verainer admitted breaching the SHPO – which was first imposed in 2016 – following a trial last week at Maidstone Crown Court.

Verainer had initially denied seven breaches of the SHPO between November 2022 and November 2023, but later pleaded guilty to the charges. The paedophile was jailed last week for a total of 16 months.

During the two-day hearing, Verainer, from Chatham, Kent, asked to be referred to as ‘Ms’ and by the pronouns ‘she-her’.

The sex offender, with long hair in bunches, was seen thumb sucking while sitting in the dock at Maidstone Crown Court. Verainer wore a sweatshirt emblazoned with pictures of kids’ alphabet building blocks as, well as the words ‘I am mentally 3 to 7 years’.

However, the court heard that the paedophile had no underlying mental health disorder, learning difficulty, or brain injury.

Furthermore, a psychiatric report concluded that despite an expressed desire to be diagnosed as an ‘adult-child’ or with ‘adult-child syndrome’, no such medical condition exists and was, according to the expert, ‘perhaps a life choice or a manifestation of extremely poor coping skills’.

During the trial, the court heard from Paul Hart – Verainer’s registered carer and partner – who gave evidence while clutching a Hello Kitty toy and sucking on a baby’s pink dummy.

He told the jury he had seen Verainer using a Samsung phone, and said: ‘I thought I could trust her.

‘She was only using it to do her music, eBay, and she had a Facebook account.

‘I knew 100% she was definitely messaging adults. She showed me she was messaging an adult on Facebook Messenger.’

Mr Hart added that another phone which Verainer had registered with police was one that had no internet access.

Verainer, who has also used the name Jorven Seren, previously flouted the conditions of the same SHPO in April 2022 after kissing two children.

During those legal proceedings, in which the paedophile was handed a seven-month prison term suspended for 18 months, Verainer made headlines by appearing in the dock dressed as an elf.

Explaining Verainer’s decision to identify as a young child, defence barrister Philippa Beswick told the court her client has ‘regressed to a happier time in her life’ as a result of stress and trauma suffered more than 20 years ago.

But Ms Beswick confirmed that the terms of the SHPO were now ‘fully accepted’.

Recorder James Lofthouse, jailing Verainer last Wednesday for a total of 16 months, said that breaching court orders ‘came with consequences’.

He said: ‘It is plain you are someone who has difficulty coping with adult life but, as the psychiatrist makes plain, there is no underlying psychiatric disorder.

‘You recognise you breached this order and that you cannot access the internet in this way which, for someone else, would be innocent activity.

‘You need to be aware that the SHPO and sex offender requirements you are subject to remain in force.

‘Further breaches will only and inevitably lead to ever longer sentences. The onus is on you to ensure that doesn’t happen.’

Verainer has been held on remand at men’s prison HMP Elmley on the Isle of Sheppey since being arrested.

A further SHPO breach charge and an offence of failing to comply with sex offender notification requirements were left on the court file.
