LINCOLN, Neb. (KCAU) — Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen and Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol John Bolduc honored a man who tackled a shooting suspect at the Kansas City Chiefs championship parade in February.

Paul Contreras of Bellevue in eastern Nebraska received a civilian award Thursday for his role. The Feb. 14 parade, which celebrated the Chiefs’ victory in the Super Bowl, was interrupted by gunfire, with one person dead and more than 20 injured.

Contreras was at the parade with his three daughters when the incident occurred. He saw a man running the opposite way of the fleeing crowd. When he got close, Contreras tackled the man, causing a weapon to fall out of his coat. Contreras, along with the help of another man, secured him until authorities came.

“Many of us hope that in difficult, and perhaps life-threatening circumstances, we would do the right thing,” Gov. Pillen said. “Paul did that in a split second, without consideration for his own well-being. That is the definition of a hero. He is very deserving of this civilian award and all of the recognition he has received for his brave actions.”

“At that moment I didn’t really know what had taken place. It was just a reaction on my part,” Contreras said. “I appreciate this [recognition]. I thank the Governor and Col. Bolduc. It’s been a lot of attention – a lot of good attention.”

Contreras received the Nebraska State Patrol Public Service Award. His wife Toni was at the ceremony with him as well.
