Rahul Gandhi announced on Tuesday that the Congress would give a legal guarantee to every farmer that they will receive the minimum support price (MSP) for their crops as per the Swaminathan Commission.
The Congress leader’s guarantee comes amid the ‘Delhi Chalo March’ organised by around 200 farmer unions to press on the Centre for their demands, including a legal guarantee for a minimum support price (MSP).
Rahul Gandhi said the announcement is “historic” and will change the lives of 15 crore farmer families by ensuring their prosperity.
“This is the first guarantee of Congress on the path of justice,” he added.
Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge also made similar guarantees while speaking at an event which was part of the `Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra’ in Chhattisgarh’s Ambikapur district.
“If Congress comes to power at the Centre (after the Lok Sabha polls), it will ensure legal guarantee to MSP in the interest of farmers. It is our first guarantee,” Kharge said.
Police fired tear gas and used water cannons to stop large groups of farmers from entering Haryana through the Khanauri border in Jind district.
Earlier in the day, the farmers participating in the ‘Delhi Chalo’ march faced similar police action at the Shambhu border in Haryana’s Ambala.
Meanwhile, the Punjab and Haryana High Court remarked on the farmers’ protest that the issue should be resolved amicably and the use of force should be the last resort.
The court noted that while the protesters have the fundamental right to expression, the state government is also duty-bound to protect its citizens and ensure no inconvenience is caused to them.
