Man in critical condition after assault, suspect arrested

LE MARS, Iowa (KCAU) — A Le Mars man has been charged with attempted murder after an assault left the victim in critical condition.

According to a release from the Le Mars Police Department, officials were called to an apartment on 2nd Street at 5:20 p.m. for a male subject who was not breathing.

When officials arrived and found the victim, life-saving measures were taken before they were transferred to a local hospital. The release specified that the victim remains in critical condition.

An investigation was launched by officials which led to the arrest of Reese Harms, 24, of Le Mars. The release states that he was charged with willful injury and attempted murder.

Court documents state that interviews were conducted with Harms and a witness. These interviews revealed that Harms put the victim in a chokehold during a confrontation.

Harms allegedly stated that he intended to choke the victim until he stopped breathing “to teach him a lesson,” according to the documents.

The witness told police that Harms had threatened to stab the victim earlier that day, and would go on to pull out a knife and started “waving it around.” The documents gave no indication that anyone was stabbed during this incident.

While Harms was being transported to the Plymouth County jail, Harms allegedly said that he “should have just killed him.”
