Scotland’s fleet of cleverly named gritter lorries has become a huge hit online as they hit the roads again to tackle the latest Arctic blast.

Transport Scotland’s gritters have gained popularity over the years for their hilarious names.

Some of them include Gritly Come Dancing, Taylor Drift, Han Snow-Lo, Gritty Gritty Bang Bang and Grit Tok.

The UK has a tradition of giving modes of transport bizarre names after a research ship was named Boaty McBoatface following a public vote in 2016.

Amey, Scotland’s South West Trunk Roads Network, is once again running their annual popular gritter-naming appeal. Last year, almost 4,000 names were submitted by Scots for consideration.

Some of the new names for this winter period are Keanu Freeze and Gritney Spears.

Lately, Scotland has been hit with another cold snap, with temperatures plummeting as low as -14C.

The country has recorded the coldest UK January temperature in four years – as forecasters warn it may get even chillier.

It is the coldest January temperature since -14.3 in Braemar, Aberdeenshire, in 2019.

Some areas of Scotland have even seen snowfall.

Lerwick, in Shetland, has had the biggest fall of snow, with more than 8in gathering by yesterday afternoon.

The Met Office upgraded its yellow weather warning for yesterday to amber as ‘further frequent snow showers’ arrive in the Northern Isles and north-west Scotland.

Forecasters believe up to an additional 4in of snow will fall in these areas, with the potential for a further 7in in some spots.
