Kyra Sedgwick and Kevin Bacon promote the Food Bank for New York City on local television: ‘We need to be responsible for our community’

Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick put on a united front as they brought attention to an issue close to their hearts Friday in New York.

The actor, 65, who has a role in the new Netflix thriller Leave the World Behind with Julia Roberts, Ethan Hawk and Mahershala Ali, joked that ‘if you stick around to the end, you’ll see me,’ in an interview on Good Day New York. 

The couple were there to promote the good works taking place at the Food Bank for New York City.  Kyra, 58, is a member of the charity’s board. 

The NYC Mayor’s Office of Food Policy reported an estimated 14 million people or 14.6 percent of New York City residents were food insecure.  In the United States, the US Department of Agriculture found some 17 million families, or 1 in 8 U.S. households struggle to have enough to eat.

‘I don’t think it’s something that people want to talk about, food insecurity, and I think people have a certain amount of shame about it, but I also think that people aren’t aware that there’s so many New Yorkers going to be hungry,’ she explained. 

The Emmy winner arrived wearing a navy blue suit with a long jacket and wide leg pants with a red and white blouse. 

Her shoulder length blonde hair was parted on the side and styled in loose waves and her makeup looked camera ready, but natural.

The Summer I Turned Pretty star stepped into a pair of well worn ankle boots. 

Kevin looked dapper in a blue button down shirt, skinny jeans and brown suede ankle boots.

The Toxic Avenger star kept warm in a blue overcoat.

His salt and pepper hair was parted on the side and he sported a silver mustache, grown perhaps for his upcoming role in The Bondsman, in which is will play a resurrected bounty hunter who gets a new chance at ‘life, love, and his nearly-forgotten musical career,’ according to IMDB, ‘only to find that his old job now has a demonic new twist.’

The City on a Hill actor admitted his and Kyra’s celebrity helped to draw attention to their efforts at the food bank.

‘It’s a very light lift for us to do that type of thing and it’s really more about us trying to be someplace where there’s going to be some cameras to highlight the good work that everyone’s doing at the food bank,’ he explained, adding that the organization has a party in Harlem and also a warehouse in the Bronx.’

Kyra described the Food Bank for New York City as a ‘joyful place,’ and said those not familiar with it may be surprised by the variety of people who turn to the organization for help. 

‘People come to eat and there’s a lot of families,’ she said.

‘I think the thing that’s striking to me is there’s a lot of students, guys dressed in suits with their brief cases and it really runs the gamut.’ 

The couple who have participated in the March to End Fossil Fuels, walked the picket line in the actors strike and worked to prevent gun violence say they feel an obligation to help.

Kyra competed on Celebrity Jeopardy December 6 against Mo Rocca and Amanda Seales to raise money for The Food Bank of New York City. Mo won the game and will advance to the next round while Kyra and Amanda both received $30,000 for their charities

Unfortunately, she was soundly defeated by Mo, who won the game and will advance to the next round in an effort to win $1,000,000 for his charity of choice, the Inner-City Scholarship Fund. 

Kyra and Amanda both received $30,000 for their charities. 

 ‘As good civilians, we need to be responsible for our community and our community are a lot of hungry New Yorkers and a lot of New Yorkers who just need support,’ Kyra stated.
