Disgraced footy journalist Tom Morris is returning to TV as Channel Nine’s chief AFL reporter less than two years after he was sacked by Fox Sports for making shocking comments about women, Asians and gay people.

Currently with SEN, he’ll be joined on Nine’s team by ex-Collingwood president Eddie McGuire’s son Xander, according to the Herald Sun.

The move is sure to get many footy fans offside after they lashed out in fury and disbelief when Morris won a prestigious award for his reporting in September.

He was sacked by Fox Footy in March 2022 after a leaked WhatsApp chat showed he made disgraceful comments about his former colleague Megan Barnard as he revealed her sexuality.

Many footy fans were angry when Morris (pictured, right, with SEN colleague Gerard Whateley) won a major award for his reporting in September – and news of his new job with Channel Nine is sure to leave them furious all over againĀ

A separate leaked video featured him making a series of racist, sexist and homophobic statements.

‘To the lads on tier four, I’m not Asian, I’m not black, I’m not a woman, I’m not gay. So don’t treat me like sh*t,’ he said in the clip, which was also leaked from a WhatsApp group.

‘I’m a man with a heart and I’ve got feelings.’

Morris was hit with heavy criticism from AFL supporters when he won a gong at the Australian Football Media Association Awards on September 19.

SEN posted the news of Morris’s win – and that of his SEN colleague Gerard Whateley – in a social media post featuring a photo of the pair that read: ‘A MASSIVE congrats to our very own @GerardWhateley and @tommorris32 for their wins at the AFMAs tonight. And a huge congrats to Tom for taking out the prestigious Alf Brown Award as this year’s best overall media performer.’

The announcement unleashed a wave of anger from dismayed footy fans.

‘Did Tom thank or actually apologise to Megan Barnard in his acceptance speech? Canno believe this can happen after waht was said. Standards clearly do not exist here,’ one commented.

‘Tom getting an award signifies how grubby the world of journalism really is,’ wrote another.

‘How does Tom Morris still have a job in the media? Disgusting,’ a third fan said.

Another commenter wrote: ‘Gerard I hope no man ever talks about your daughters the way Tom talks about women. And that they neve see your endorsement of Tom as evidence it’s what they deserve.’

As news of his job at Nine spread on Thursday, more fans were left furious.

‘Talented talented people can’t get ahead in aflm media circles but we have to do backflips to rehab Tom Morris cos he has the right drinking buddies,’ one wrote.

‘Another reason why Channel 9 continues to never get footy rights. Look at who they employ,’ wrote another on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.

Morris’s sacking by Fox Sports came less than 24 hours after he made national headlines when he was slammed by Western Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge in his press conference after their round-one loss to Melbourne last year.

Beveridge saw red and erupted at Morris over a report he made about the team, labelling him an ’embarrassment’ during an icy exchange in the post-match press conference.

After he was let go, Morris posted a message on social media.

‘I would like to unconditionally apologise to everyone for my disgusting and disgraceful comments, which became public yesterday,’ he wrote.

‘I am especially sorry to the person involved. No one should ever, in any place, or at any time, be spoken about in that way.

‘I am deeply ashamed at my behaviour. My comments were hurtful to many and I will now take the time to listen, learn and work to improve myself, ensuring that I become a better person. I am truly sorry to everyone.’
