The telco said it was aware of issues affecting some customers but are yet to offer a full statement on the matter.

‘Our engineers are currently investigating a network fault that is impacting Optus Mobile and Fixed customers,’ Optus said on its website.

A spokesperson apologised to customers on Twitter.

‘We’re aware of an issue impacting connections for some Optus mobile and fixed customers. We understand connectivity is important and are working to restore services as a priority. We apologise for any inconvenience caused while we have the issue resolved,’ they said.

Melbourne’s train network also shut down earlier on Wednesday, leaving many commuters stranded.

It’s not clear if this was a result of the Optus outage but Metro Trains have confirmed services have now resumed with bus replacements also available.

Many Aussie Optus subscribers have shared their frustration online, with some only able to make SOS calls.

‘How is it possible that the entire country could have no #optus? I have no phone coverage at all,’ one tweeted.

‘What is going on with #Optus this morning. Woke up and phone not working. No email or Comms from the company either. Poor form,’ said another.
