Arsenal’s attack failed to produce

Arteta has some thinking to do

The Arsenal boss has seen his side lose two games in a week after riding the club’s longest unbeaten run in 16 years.

The absence of Odegaard played a key part, as did that of Jesus. But the Spaniard will be annoyed by the way his side let the game slip in the second half.

Havertz’s challenge sparked the home side into life but Arsenal still looked the most likely side to score for much of the game. Ultimately they couldn’t score and recorded just one shot on target in the game.

On a day that saw Man City hit six, Arteta will need to rethink his side’s attacking plan.

There could have been about FIVE red cards at St James’ Park

Gary Neville has blasted Kai Havertz for a ‘stupid’ and ‘dangerous’ challenge on Sean Longstaff in Arsenal‘s clash against Newcastle that saw him go flying in on his rival.

Newcastle players were up in arms and surrounding the referee after the German midfielder’s reckless challenge and they were left stunned as Havertz escaped with a yellow card.

Commentator Gary Neville was also shocked by the first half incident as he hammered Havertz for the tackle, claiming the player was ‘never getting there’.

A statement win for the Magpies

Eddie Howe has masterminded another massive win for Newcastle. The home side were every bit the equal of their opponents and faced up to the Arsenal pressure in the second half to end their unbeaten start to the campaign.

Gordon’s goal may not have stood on another day but Newcastle fans won’t care one bit. The win sees them climb up to sixth in the table, four points behind the Gunners.

Another VAR check…offside this time

Gordon could be offside becuase he’s ahead of the goalkeeper. It’s madness.

Now they’re checking for a foul

VAR are checking whether Joelinton fouled Gabriel on the goal line just before the goal.

Will it stand?

There’s going to be a check. Did the ball go out of play in the lead-up? It’s very tight indeed…

WIllock and Murphy replace Wilson and Almiron

Rice goes close

Arsenal worked the ball so well down the left side before Martinelli clipped the ball into the box. Trippier headed away but onyl to Rice, who ut his header wide of the mark from 10 yards.

Chance for Gordon

The game just opened up for the Magpies as they had Arsenal stretched. Wilson held of Gabriel and played in Almiron who found Gordon running in but the winger scuffed his effort from a tight angle allowing Raya to claim.

Havertz walking a tightrope

The midfielder dived into a tackle on Wilson that could have seen him recieve a second yellow card. Arteta will certainly be thinking about replacing him before he’s drawn into another scuffle.

Newcastle kick things off.

Change at the break

Dan Burn comes off for the home side after being unable to shake the effects of a fall in the first half. Livramento replaces the defender.

A feisty encounter that could go either way

Mikel Arteta will be the happier manager from the first period after his side silenced the home crowd and dominated the early exchanges.

Clear cut chances have been few and far between but Arsenal have looked dominant for most of the half. Their only wobble has come in the final part of the half following Havertz’s late tackle on Longstaff.

Newcastle rallied to give the Arsenal defence some work but the Gunners looked equal to everything thrown at them.

it’s finely pised at St James’ Park. What will the second period bring?

Guimaraes has lost his head

The Brazilian is very lucky to still be on the pitch after two incidents which could have seen him dismissed.

The midfielder was cleared by VAR for an apparent elbow on Jorginho off the ball before booting ball against Rice from only a few yards away.

Decent chance for Martinelli

The winger used his speed and trickery to fashion a shooting opportunity from the corner of the Newcastle box but Pope was equal to the Brazilian’s effort.

Newcastle looking the most likely

Havertz’s challenge has appeared to energise the home team, who have looked really dangerous in the last few minutes.

Guimaraes is the latest in black and white to have an effort but his tame shot went well wide of the mark.

Magpies nearly find a way through

Trippier’s cross into the box caused all sorts of problems for the Arsenal defence. Wilson got a flick on the delivery which saw the ball land at the feet of Gordon at the far post but the winger couldn’t sort his feet out as the ball deflected off him and into the grasp of Raya.

Arsenal caution

A crazy late challenge from Havertz on Longstaff gets the German booked. VAR had a look but deemed the tackle not worthy of a red card.

Newcastle players were outraged by the tackle and Gordon, Longstaff and Schar joined the Arsenal midfielder in the book for their protests.

It’s threatening to boil over at St James’ Park.

Magpies show attacking intent

Newcastle have finally given the home fans something to get excited about. It’s not much, but they’ve finally had a period of control and have probed the Arsenal box looking for a breakthrough.

The Gunners defence remains unbreached. Arteta has built a resilient outfit in recent years.

Huge chance for Newcastle

The Magpies have a rare chance in the game from a fee-kick into the box. Burn headed down at the far post where Wilson stood but the forward could only fire over the bar from close range.

The offside flag went straight up but it would have been a tight one for VAR if it had hit the back of the net.

Corners galore

More pressure on the Newcastle goal following a period of dominance from the away side. Declan Rice has been the main driving force in the last few minutes, breaking up play and darting towards to the opposition goal.

At this rate it’ll only be a matter of time until they break the deadlock.

Scare for the Gunners

Newcastle’s press nearly resulted in a comedy own-goal for the away side when Gabriel fizzed a pass back to his goalkeeper.

Fortunately for Arsenal, Raya’s touch was assured and he quikly offloaded the pass onto an Arsenal defender.

Arsenal starting to tick

The Gunners have just started to impose themselves on the hosts. Saka’s influence is growing in the game and the away side have stepped up the pitch to control the ball and much of the play.

Arsenal content with Newcastle possession

The home side have had the majority of the ball in the early exchanges. Arsenal are looking to steal the ball high up and have been waiting for a chance to pounce.

Pressure from the off

Newcastle have sprung out of the traps. It’s been a high intensity start but no shots on goal as of yet.

‘I cannot guarantee that we are trying to get that recovery as quick as possible,’ he said.

No Odegaard for the Gunners

Arsenal are without their skipper Martin Odegaard for their trip to Newcastle tonight.

The Gunners have stated that their captain ‘is not fit for today‚Äôs squad.’

Was his introduction when Arsenal were losing heavily against West Ham to blame for his absence today?

Was Wednesday night just a blip for the Gunners?

Arsenal suffered their first defeat of the season against West Ham on Wednesday having navigated the early part of the season with relative ease.

The Gunners are yet to show the sparkling attacking play that spurred them onto a suprising title tilt last term but their ability to win games without playing well is a sign of their progress.

However, after their 3-0 loss, tonight’s tricky tie holds even greater significance. Mikel Arteta was quick to take responsibility for his much-changed team’s lacklustre performance and we can expect to see a return to the familiar starting XI tonight.

But what answers will the north London club provide from this stern test?

Howe much will Eddie change his team?

The Newcastle manager masterminded a stunning 3-0 victory against Manchester United with a second-string starting XI that was picked with an eye on tonight’s game.

But the degree to which the agpies fringe players excelled may just have given Howe a few selection headaches. The likes of Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall will almost certainly drop back out, despite their superb performances, in favour of stalwarts Kieran Trippier and Dan Burn.

However, Joe Willock could see himself gain a starting berth after scoring on his return to the team at Old Trafford.
